Seit einiger Zeit wird vor dem Hintergrund wieder zunehmender Menschenrechtsverletzungen in undemokratischen sowie in einigen demokratischen Staaten auch am KIT die Frage diskutiert, ob Forschungskooperationen mit Einrichtungen dieser Länder ethisch noch vertretbar sind.
 
Die KIT-Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching and Innovation nimmt das zum Anlass für eine Veranstaltung, die die Frage diskutiert, welches Ethos für Wissenschaft und Forschung zugrunde gelegt werden muss, dass Menschenrechtsverletzungen überhaupt als für Forschungskooperationen problematisch in den Blick geraten können, wie sich dieses Ethos begründet und wie vor diesem Hintergrund im Geiste des Grundgesetzes die dort bezeugte Wissenschaftsfreiheit zu verstehen ist.

Lehrveranstaltungen in den Natur-, Ingenieur- oder Wirtschaftswissenschaften behandeln mitunter Inhalte, die in gesellschaftlichen Debatten mit rechtlichen und moralischen oder ethischen Fragestellungen verknüpft werden. Etwa: welche ökologische und soziale Verantwortung tragen Unternehmen und ihre MitarbeiterInnen? Wie sind die Folgen der Entwicklung neuer Technologien zu bewerten? In welchem Maße sollte der Staat digitale Plattformen und den Einsatz von KI regulieren? Der Kurs bietet Gelegenheit, sich mit den Grundlagen der Reflexion ethischer Fragestellungen in ihrem Verhältnis zum Recht zu befassen. Ziel ist es, Lehrende mit grundlegenden theoretischen Mitteln zur Analyse ethischer Probleme vertraut zu machen. Hierauf aufbauend werden praxisorientierte Werkzeuge vorgestellt, anhand derer sich Fragen nach Verantwortung, Autonomie, Gerechtigkeit und Nachhaltigkeit in der eigenen Lehre adressieren lassen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Übungen und Diskussionen zum methodischen Umgang mit ethischen Fragestellungen, wie sie sich in konkreten Lehrkontexten verschiedener Disziplinen stellen.
Zielsetzung und Kompetenzerwerb
Der Kurs stellt Methoden und Ansätze vor, die es Lehrenden erleichtern, ethische Problemlagen aufzugreifen und Studierenden Gelegenheit zu bieten, ihre eigene Reflexions- und Diskurskompetenzen zu schulen. Hierzu gehören Fallstudien und praxisnahe Szenarien, die aktuelle und relevante Herausforderungen veranschaulichen. Die Teilnehmenden erwerben praktische Kompetenzen, um orientiert an studentischen Bedürfnissen Lernräume für die kritische Reflexion normativer Fragestellungen zu schaffen.
Der Kurs wird in Kooperation mit der Academy for Responsibility in Research, Teaching, and Innovation (ARRTI) angeboten. Der eintägige Workshop umfasst 8 Arbeitseinheiten und richtet sich an Lehrende in allen Fachbereichen. Im Anschluss an den Kurs besteht das Angebot für Lehrende des KIT, 4 weitere Arbeitseinheiten über ein Co-Teaching an einem Einzeltermin in einer ihrer eigenen Lehrveranstaltungen zu erwerben. Es sind keine Vorkenntnisse erforderlich.

In light of the war in Ukraine, which has starkly illustrated how quickly scientific advances can be repurposed for conflict, research that touches national security—whether in cryptography, dual‑use technologies, or emerging weapon systems—carries especially high stakes. This workshop seeks to bring together scholars, administrators, ethicists, and policy makers to explore the complex terrain of security‑relevant research (SRR) within higher‑education institutions. 
We aim to frame the conversation around fundamental questions such as: 
What qualifies as security‑relevant research? 
What processes and structures should be a part of universities to enable the responsible conducting of SRR? 
What responsibilities do individual researchers have regarding SRR? 
In what ways do contemporary funding structures and government contracts influence visibility and scrutiny of SRR? 
Advocates emphasize that academic freedom fuels innovation, peer review safeguards rigor, and university‑based research can offer transparent, ethical alternatives to opaque military labs. Critics highlight concerns about accelerating arms races, exposing students to dual‑use dilemmas, and creating conflicts of interest with industry or defense sponsors.  
One goal of the workshop is that the insights, case studies, and draft guidelines generated during the workshop could later be assembled into an edited volume. The aim is to capture the diverse perspectives and emerging best‑practice recommendations in a scholarly collection that can serve as a reference for institutions grappling with security‑relevant research.
