Responsibility in Discourse – Addressing Ethical and Legal Questions in Your Own Teaching
As part of the Baden-Württemberg Certificate for Teaching and Learning at University Level, ARRTI offers the workshop Responsibility in Discourse – Addressing Ethical and Legal Questions in Your Own Teaching. Courses in the natural sciences, engineering, or economics sometimes cover content that is connected to societal debates involving legal, moral, or ethical questions. For example: What ecological and social responsibilities do companies and their employees bear? How should the consequences of developing new technologies be assessed? To what extent should the state regulate digital platforms and the use of AI?
The course provides an opportunity to engage with the foundations of reflecting on ethical questions in relation to the law. Its aim is to familiarize instructors with basic theoretical tools for analyzing ethical problems. Building on this, practical tools are introduced that allow questions of responsibility, autonomy, justice, and sustainability to be addressed in one’s own teaching. The focus is on exercises and discussions on methodically handling ethical questions as they arise in concrete teaching contexts across different disciplines.
Objectives and Competence Development
The course presents methods and approaches that make it easier for instructors to address ethical issues and provide students with opportunities to develop their own reflection and discourse skills. This includes case studies and practice-oriented scenarios that illustrate current and relevant challenges. Participants acquire practical skills to create learning environments oriented to student needs that foster critical reflection on normative questions.
Participation
The course is offered in cooperation with PeBA (Personnel Development and Professional Training) at KIT.
